Elbow exhaust leak down low

I have a Mercruiser 470 that has a serious exhaust leak down in the area where the elbow attaches to the transom. It is a 1979 Pre-Alpha drive. I can't see the leak but I can see the exhaust smoke when I start her up cold and smell it when running slow with the cover off. I am thinking that I will have to pull the engine to get at this. Is there a way to get to this area from the outside (transom side)?

Boat is a Glastron SSV-177XL.

No and it is probably leaking water in to the boat too.

I am thinking that I will have to pull the engine to get at this.
