Re: Electric Chain Saws?

I'm with the electric guys. I used a 16" WEN to death - took about 21 years. Now I have an 16" Craftsman. You can cut down, and cut up, a fairly large tree with one of these guys. I've done it several times. As my work is all within reach of an electric outlet, I have no reason to ever consider a gas unit.

awwww man I just bought a new Stihl and just love how it cuts wood like butter. But I also have a ton of tree's and land that would require it. I bet for landscape trimming around the home, you would do better with the little electric. They really have come a long ways. Let us know which one you end up with.
I'm on the hunt for a new leaf blower and I'm talking back pak type. I have some large Oaks that shed leaves all fall and 1/2 of winter. I want one that will let me throw the rake away!! The old one, would actually remove 3-5 inches of dry snow!! kind of fun to use when everyone else was breaking out the shovel ot snow blower.

I have a Stihl ms 170 for a small saw. Its great, light has enough power and cheap. MSRP is $180 new. I have used the Remington ones, we have a couple at work. They are ok if kept very sharp, but no where near the power of my little gas one.

I spent $80 on a electric "polesaw" just a electric with a detachable, extendable handle. Stretches out to about 10 feet-no more ladder!
Works great for stuff up to about 3".

I have an 18V Black and Decker. I love it for light pruning - can use it in the rain. Have even taken it kayak camping.

If you don't mind the extension cord and:
1. costs around $50
2. cuts just as fast a similar size gas saw
3. Never have to worry with gas,oil and tuneups
4.Is quiet, won't disturb neighbors or noise ordinance
5. can store in house without worry of gas fumes
6. can be stored forever and still function when needed
Why is it so hard to decide?

Mine uses chain oil.

Re: Electric Chain Saws?

I just wanted to follow up and let everyone know how our search for a new saw turned out. I was going to get the 12" Poulan that we looked at originally but it was sold by the time we were ready to buy and the store did not expect to get any more in. I found a 12" Remington on Amazon and was able to give it a workout yesterday on some still green oak wood and was very pleased with the performance. It doesn't cut as fast or smooth as my Stihl but it had no problem cutting thru the limbs up to about 4" that I trimmed up. The saw is very light and easy to use and control with one hand so I can feed branches with one hand and cut with the other. The manual oiler is a bit mickey mouse but seems to get the job done so all in all I think that this is going to work out perfectly for what I will be using it for and thanks to everyone here for your suggestions.

On a side note, I read a few reviews where some people said they returned the saw because it took them 5 minutes to cut thru a 3" tree. At one of the local stores we visited, 2 of the saws on display had the chain installed backwards so if someone unfamiliar with a chain saw took one of those home and tried to cut something they were going to be very disappointed.

I got a model called a alligator.i also have a gas chainsaw. I use the alligator more on small trees and limbs.it holds the branches while you cut. a lot safer than trying to hold and cut with a regular chainsaw.

I have both. I have a 12" electric and a 14" gas. The electric is nice because I have a pole that attaches to it for pruning trees.

I watched my father in law cut the same green extension cord twice in one day with his electric chain saw, so fair warning, when cutting trees this is one of those situations where high color contrast is good.

I finally got around to felling a tree that was damaged during some high winds last fall. Saw worked great as usual, and I also used the generator so that it got some run time, and I could stabilize the gas... Came close to cutting the orange cord 3 times tho. Lucky it slowed down fast enough each time.

Maybe that's just the way these small electric saws are because the Remington I just got is the same way. If I don't empty the oil out of the saw when I'm done it will all leak out after a few days. I haven't had a problem with the cord yet but OMG, give me an electric hedge trimmer and I can turn a 100' cord into a 50 footer in a matter of minutes.
