Electric Choke and throttle issues..85hp Force

Finally got the engine going after what seamed like an eternity holding the choke down manually. Put it out on the lake and got it going for a while, waited for the smoke to clear and put it in gear and had it running fine. I gave it good throttle and never got up on plane..the engine sounded nice at full throttle for a stretch and then quit. I am debating whether or not to take this to a shop, is this a throttle cable issue, timing, or other. Doesn't seem like my throttle is opening all the way. Also my choke stopped closing for some reason. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated..

You did squeeze the fuel line bulb until it was firm, didn't you? This puts fuel into the carbs and must be done the first time the engine is started.

If the choke is not closing--you should hear them (3) click-- check the green wire to be sure you have power to the choke solenoid when the key is pushed in while in the start or run position. If no power, check the switch and wire from it to the solenoid. If you have power, check the solenoid (with the green wire removed) for continuity. If you have infinite resistance or no continuity, the solenoid is burned out.

Sometimes the choke levers hang up on the gaskets between the air shroud and carbs. The gaskets get soaked with fuel and swell with age. Check that first. when pushed open, the chokes should move smoothly.

Other issues sound like fuel delivery issues. Check the complete system from tank to carbs, checking for gum, clogs, bad fuel pump diaphragm, etc.

To check if carbs are opening fully, while engine not running, put control lever into full throttle position. Remove the big air shroud from the front of the carbs and look into them. The butterflies in the back (chokes are in front)should be horizontal or nearly so. Be sure the nylon stopper button on the tower is up against the block.

If way off, get a manual and syncronize the carbs and timing.
