Hi my name is Carlos and I just got an used boat. The engine in the boat is a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL. After spending over 2k on repairs for the cooling system I tooked for a ride and now there is another problem.
The engine will shut off sometimes and its hard to start also. The mechanic that did the job for the cooling system warned me about the fuel pump going out. Well now that I am broke I decided to start doing some troubleshooting and work myself. hehe ( I am not a mechanic).
I was fortunate to find this forum and found a troubleshooting steps and was able to pinpoint the fuel pump by checking voltage from the relay and to the fuel pump itself. I ended up replacing the fuel pump. The new fuel pump works great now.
Now with the current problem. The engine will not start. I verified that fuel is getting into the carburetor. While looking at the carburator I noticed that the lever or rod that connects the choke was missing a clamp to hold in place the rod at the bottom were it connects with the cam that sits by the red electric choke. The rod was not sitting right so after figuring out how it should be, the engine started right away. I put a wire thru the hole in the rod so it wont come loose again. The problem is that the electric choke seems to not be working. Ground is directly going to the engine chasis and the other cable (purple) going to the alternator. I applied 12v directly to the purple cable and nothing happens. Is the electric choke bad?
Also is the small buton by the remote control (foward and reverse shift mechanism) suppose to be the choke?
Thanks in advance.
Carlos
