I was wondering if you could ad an electric choke to a 1961 Merc. 45 HP.
S/N 1308416
The control box that I have has a push button on the back top for the choke.
Right now it is manual.
Thanks Jeff.

Re: Electric Choke

I assume you have the pull up manual choke lever like the older classic 4 cyl. Go to a marine dealer that has been in business for a long time and scrounge one off an old engine. The carburetor is probably setup to accept the linkage of the auto function.

On my control box, the choke wire is a yellow wire with a black stripe. It should be in your engine wiring harness as a loose wire adjacent to the connector. With the switch on (probably need it on) pushing the choke button will put 12v on this wire. If your color code is different, look around the engine for a loose wire from the engine electrical harness and test them till you find one with 12v on it when you push the button. The case of the choke grounds to the engine block.

That ought to work,
Mark

Re: Electric Choke

I have found 2 of the solenoids on ebay they are the same number as in the parts list. But they dont seem to have the plunger with them. If I find the plunger, then would I need anything else to hook it up. or will the linkage between the carbs be alright.

Re: Electric Choke

I have opened the control box to put on the new cables for throttle and shift levers and discovered that the wiring harness wires have been spliced together. This needs to be replaced, along with the ign switch, because all wires were soldered on.
The only number I could find on the wiring harness was 45876. Hope fully this number has been replaced by an other.
On the ign switch there were 2 #s c51095 x 133.
Any ideas or numbers.

It sure is. I have been told that this box is a 1970's model and that sometime in the 70s they changed.
Looking for item 45 Cable

Re: Electric Choke

Thanks. I think that I am going to do away with the ing switch in control box. Going to cut wiring harness back to where the wires are good and put in a dash ign/choke key switch.
Thanks Jeff.
