I have a ‘90 mercruiser 5.7. Replacing the mechanical fuel pump with a carter electric. Where is the best place to mount the new pump? 21.5ft Mariah. Any need for a prime circuit, as it n a timed circuit to run the pump before cranking. Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Mount it between the fuel filter, 'n the carb,....

If you need a primer circuit, you have a carb problem, not a fuel pump problem,......

I meant where to physically mount it. It is a vane style pump, about the same size as the screw on fuel filter. Don’t want to just go poking screws into anything.

Do you have a oil pressure activated switch? If it is a genuine Carter switch there there is a extra terminal that is wired into the start circuit to operate during cranking mode.
As Bondo said you do not want to pressurize the fuel filter. Remount the filter where you can mount the pump next to it then you will have to re plumb the pump discharge to the carburetor.
You still would be better off with the original style fuel pump.

Outside small lug on the starter solenoid is power for an electric fuel pump during cranking. Main power must go through an oil pressure switch.

My pump is mounted on the front of the starboard head, although I used a dimensionally smaller Airtex and not a Carter.

Thanks for all the info folks, I know how to hook it up. I’m just looking for the correct location to physically screw it down. Should I make a bracket to attach it to the engine or mount it to the boat itself.

Doesn't matter. I was able to find a location that let me reuse the hard line to the carb after cutting/flaring one end. If you're using flexible line that gives you unlimited options
