electric fuel pump

I have electronic fuel pump in the back right side of the boat and I can hear it pulsing and pumping as motor rews up . I have switch for it on dashboard . Since I got the boat 2 months ago it was always on . Yesterday I tried to drive boat with fuel pump off and it worked the same like it is on . So what is the purpose of this pump? Is it only for starting the boat and then you need to turn it off ? I asume that it spends more fuel when on.

Re: electronic fuel pump

#First its an electric pump not electronic .....to be accurate a diaphragm pump ..its probably in stead of a primer bulb .just used to fill the system before starting ...When not on the fuel just flows through the valves ..probably has a filter so if you get a blockage you know where to look

Re: electronic fuel pump

Thanks for answer fucavi, so in the future I will use it only for starting system then turn off. My fuel consumption was very high, maybe it is because the fuel pump was always on. Or maybe it is drunk force motor anyway :)

Re: electronic fuel pump

The electric pump should be removed. Most are not coast guard approved.Kind of like a time bomb in the back of the boat.
If you get ispected you could get a ticket.
Take it out and install a primer bulb.
Excessive fuel use could be a few different things.
What RPM's at WOT?How old is the fuel pump diaphram?Check the timing.J
