My control box is for a 1970 60 HP electric shift Evenrude model # 60073. I was getting ready to mount it to my boat but had to take a bracket off the back to make it fit. when I had it opened, I noticed There was a brown wire with a green stripe comming out the back. Also I noticed that under the forward button, there is 2 empty wire conections, yet neutral & reverse both have wires attatched where they belong. There was also a grey wire taped to itself inside. Could these 2 wires actually connect to the forward button? I know there is something wrong with the lower unit, but have not had any time to actually check it out yet. I am just taking my time with installing this motor so it will be ready for next season. Can one of you talented individuals out there point me in the right direction? I do not have a manual for this motor yet, so I'm in limbo!

Are you sure about the colors on the brown/green? The gray wire is the tach lead and there should NOT be any wires on the fwd button.

Thanks for clearing up the forward button leads, thats a relief! I have a tach, so this makes the grey wire useful to me.<br />Yes, I looked at the brown wire with a green stripe a couple times. It is connected to the key switch it looks like. There is no bare wire at the end, nor any kinda connector. The back plate even has a small hole that the wire went through. Perhaps the prievious owner had it as an accessory lead??? So I should just ignor it I'm thinking?

Could the brown/green wire be for a overheating light.

That wire is purple, with green stripe. It is connected to what is called a blocking diode, and wired to the ignition terminal of the switch. It keeps the engine from lurching into forward gear when thr key is shut off. It delays auto shifting into forward until all engine rotation is stopped. Without this feature, if the engine were running at a high idle speed at dock, and the switch were turned off the boat would lurch forward, possibly causing damage, or injury.

Looks to me.... diagram shows no brown green wire in box... so assuming it went under dash for accessory <br />Hot horn is tan and purple wires<br /><br />any wires that don't run through harness prolly don't belong... although I'm glad to have added Acc. wire from switch...somethings I just don't want on when the key isn't

Thanks everyone, <br /> R.Johnson. you wrote this<br />"That wire is purple, with green stripe. It is connected to what is called a blocking diode, and wired to the ignition terminal of the switch. It looks like its already connected to the key switch. Where do I connect the other end???? Like I said, it went through the back plate of control box. Does this mean I have to buy a blocking diode?<br />By all means... I do not need any injuries to me or anyone / thing  <br />{by the way, maybe because the sun was in my eyes, I thought the wire was brown} <br />I must get a manual this weekend!

It's not the sunlight, I have a terrible time with colors'. The blocking diode is brown, and about the size of a large grape. If the wire has not been cut, it would lead back to the main plug-in connector.
