I'm looking at a 1978 85 hp rude. I have heard horror stories about electric shift selenoids. I was wondering did they make this engine in an electric shift if so how can I tell if thats what it is??

Thanks!!

Re: electric shift or not???

A 1978 was not electric or hydro-electric. However, if it is "electric' shift it's hydro-electric and from the late 60's , pre 1973.

As for an easy way to tell if it's electric or not - if it only has one control cable from the control (for throttle) it's electric. If it has 2 control cables (one for throttle, one for shift) it's not electric shift.

Re: electric shift or not???

Thank you very much High Trim! Glad you could help me out. Currently the engine sits under a very tight wrapping of blue plastic and I dont think the owner would want me tearing that off just to check, seeming how it is still the begining of january... I hate the winter now but if I buy this boat then and have to see it in the garage going no where for the next 3 months I'm probably going to go nuts!!

Not a problem, but beware of buying motors in winter. Unfortunately, there are too many scammers out there that sell lemons in the winter by passing them off as "winterized" and unable to test. Unless its a deal of a lifetime, I never pay without a thorough investigation.

Any seller who won't allow a thorough inspection of the product being sold, is a seller to say goodbye to .... as in run, Forest, run!
