I have a 1971 Evinrude 50 HP outboard that I just got and it starts in gear, and won't shift out.

I have read some of the other posts about the unit and if I understand it right there are 2 solinoids that run a hydraulic shifter.

I have the voltages present in the wires at the motor depending on the selection at the shifter buttons. I had been hoping for something simple and cheap.

Could this just be an oil problem or not? I haven't changed the lower unit oil yet.

If it is the shift unit, how expensive does it get to have work done on the lower unit shifter components?

How hard is it to work on if you get the right books?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Drifty

Re: Electric shift problems

Disconnect the wiring from the solenoids (knife switch connectors)and check them for resistance. Each solenoid lead should read from 5-6 ohms to ground. If they do, and you have power there as you say, Drain and refill the LU with dextron III and run on the hose for awhile to try and clean up any sticking components. DextronIII is high in detergent and will clean minor infections. If this doesn't free it up, its "purchasing a manual" time....and a disassemble

*If the dextron clears it up, replace the LU oil with Type C and off you go....DextronIII is only to be used as a cleaner/flusher, not as a lubricant!!!

The recommended oil is Type C.
DextronIII is only used as a flush!!!
