Re: Electric shift spring clutch on OMC sterndrive

My friend once had the same shifting problem, it didn't go into forward. The problem was the shiftwire outside the boat. It had been rubbing against the upper housing, and one of the wires was now separated. It took a thorough inspection, before we found the spot where the wire was broken. Anyway, we soldered the wire together again, gave it some heat shrink, and it has been working since then.

The shiftwire comes out of the intermediate housing, goes through the upper gear housing and dowm to the lower unit. It is held by a spring, to keep it clear, when the outdrive turns from side to side.

I had a similer incident. A muskrat got inside the exhaust housing and chewed the wires. The only way to see it was to seperate the upper and lower units.
I haven't tryed it myself, but I have heard of people rebending the broken end of the spring with good results.

those springs are a pretty stout piece of metal, I suppose it could be done with the right tools. However, I would never do that on my forward gear.

You have to heat the end to bend it. I'd do it on my own unit to save money but not if some one else's.

Are the blue and green wires for the forward and reverse run into the tilt motor or are they somewhere else on the port side of the motor? I have a 1971 omc on a IMP Aztec with a volvo penta 305. thanks for the help.

Shift wires run back along the port side to the intermediate housing - the don't go to the tilt motor. Is your drive OMC or Volvo?

Originally there were two single wire connectors of the hook and spade type with rubber tubes slid over them. They were located above the tilt motor where the wires come off of the top of the engine. But no telling what they have been replaced with by now.

Go to the back by the sterndrive itself, if you look closely at the left side of the upper unit you will see a thick black cable that is coming from the stern drive and it goes through the intermediate housing on the port side.

that black cable is what has the shift wires inside, trace that to the bilge area to find the shift wires.
