Hi all, Sorry to ask lots of questions. Will an electric start go onto a 75 40hp evinrude. Will I need to change the flywheel. I dont think the one I have has any teeth.
Also once the flywheel nut is removed from the top of the flywheel, how does one remove the flywheel. Is there a tapershaft that the key fits into. I have given it a light tap to remove it but it seems very firm.

Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe....

Yes, you will need a flywheel with teeth. The rope models came with a flywheel with no teeth.

What you need is a harmonic puller to remove the flywheel. This puller pulls at the three holes in the top of the flywheel. DON'T try to pull it with a gear puller which would grab the edges of the flywheel. Would probably break it.

Keep us posted....thanks.

Here is a pic of the setup. I have a 76 that looks identical to yours but with the electric start.

Hi All, long time no talky. Well my pull start fell apart. The bolt that runs through the top wheel has broken and the spring fleew out into the sea. That was funny. So I've bought an electric starter. I'm only missing one bolt from the fron that hold it on. My problem is I have a stator (I hope thats the right word) to charge the battery. The plate on the boat has the points on it and the wire runs down through a gap in the plate; will I be able to run the wires from the stator around the plate and down these same holes. I have an evinrude 1975 40hp.

I'm in Lawnton, 1/2hr north of Brissy. I maight be able to help with your pull start, even with electric start fitted, it doesn't hurt to have the pull start fitted.
I have a couple of 71 Bigtwin pullstarters, If they fit your 75 model, I can give you one. Post a pic if you can of your old one.

Yeah I know lawnton. The old pull start is broken as I said. The bolt that runs through it has pulled the thread lug straight through the cast. Also the spring has "left the building". I'll be heading that way on Saturday arvo on the way up the coast. I'll mail you some pics. Whats your email address. I can send a pic of the fly wheel and bits. I guess the mountings have to fit and the teeth that engage on the flywheel. Knowing my luck they will be way off. I'm expecting to have very good success with the electric start as it starts very easily with the pull start.

My 28 and 9.9 Evinrudes both have pull and remote electric start. After I spent 1 hour REALLY adjusting both engines to 1 pull starts, I don't need the starters. "Very true Mr Petersen. Are you a rocket scientist."

My 40 starts with a half pull when warm and 2-3 when cold. Although I haven't taken it out since my trailer springs rusted out 2 months ago. So it might need a bit of a tune before I head out again. I just need one more bolt then I'll be right to test the starter. Does anyone recommend running two batterys in parrallel.
