Electric Starter Problem

I've got a 35hp 1958 Evinrude.

I installed an electric starter that I purchased used, and a new solenoid. The starter looks unused and the seller claimed it was never used - the motor he put it on was stored improperly and seized up.

The solenoid looked like it had been purchased and returned, and was missing a nut.

I wired a push button starter switch and a high current cut off switch (it just interrupts the circuit to the button).

So, when hooked up to my brand new deep cycle, it makes the gear on the starter engage the flywheel but it doesn't turn. I hooked it up to my diehard charger/starter (125amp) and when I push the button the flywheel turns a couple notches but that's it.

I'm hoping someone can give me some troubleshooting tips or take a guess at what's wrong.

Thanks!

Re: Electric Starter Problem

Using a pair of jumper cables try going from the battery directly to the starter. If it still does it have the starter checked at your local auto electric shop.

Re: Electric Starter Problem

now why didn't I think of that lol

I'm not a bad mechanic but for some reason my brain shuts off once electricity is involved

If anybody reads this and decides to try it, be ready for sparks:eek:

applying the power directly made the starter turn, but just a little bit.

I took it off, cleaned it up, lubricated (w/ electrical grade spray that dries) - now when I give it juice (either way), it turns a little, hesitates, then turns the motor over well

thanks!
