Which does a better job, electric or hand pump changers? Whats your take on the pros and cons of each?

Hand pumps suck (literally). ;)

The electrics are so much easier. No contest. But the hand pumps don't need electricity. It's dang rare not to have a battery in a boat when changing oil.

I bought a drill-operated $42 jabsco; didn't work good. A walmart atwood hand pump for $18 did the job.

I use an Oil Bouy vacumn pump. It's OK but it takes a while and I have to empty it once before fininshing the "drain". If you have time and a couple of cold ones, it's just OK. It is clean and easy to use.

This is what I did and it works great.I put a ball valve on my oilpan and attached a hose to it. Now I know this woulnt work on every boat but it works on mine as there is plenty of room to get to the ball valve.I put the hose out of the drain hole and open the valve works great if you trailer. If you leave it in a slip others can help you more.I have a drill pump that I used to use but it was very slow.

I use a handpump that threads onto my Volvo dipstick. Way better than the drill operated ones.

Topsider vacuum pump works great as long as the oil is hot,not just warm.Tank is plenty large for complete oil change.Takes about 25 pumps and then walk away and it does the rest.Charlie

What Flukinicehole did is very simialr to the standard Merc system now, however, there is no ball valve. The hose has it's own plug. You pull the hose out of the drain hole and that's about it. I love it!!

Re: Electric vs hand pump oil changers

i've seen those oil drain hoses for sale. in fact i've had one laying in my spare parts pile for a few years. i need to pull my engine to attach it, hasn't happened yet.

i prefer the hand pump. pump it enough to get a good vacuum and it does the rest.

with a drill pump, you have to hold the pump in your hand so it doesn't spin with the drill. it gets hot, you have to be there the entire time, and if you space out and let the pump slip in your hand...there go the attached hoses, next comes oil splattered all over the place. ask me how i know.

the oil boy holds the old oil in a self-enclosed container. drill pump needs an extra tank that's usually pretty easy to tip, esp if you have to reach for another beer. i managed to avoid that but came pretty close a few times.

imo

Re: Electric vs hand pump oil changers

I've had them all. Started with a mid-range vaccum type, pump it up, open the line, repeat many many times. Went to a high-range vacuum type, same outcome. Too much pumping, not enough draining. Finally bought a 12V electric, pump mounted on the side of the holding tank. Tighten the hose onto the dipstick fitting, attach the leads to the battery, flip a switch and 2 minutes later I'm done. There is absolutely no comparison.
