Does anybody have any feedback on the Lewmar pro series 700H windlass, or the powerwinch 31' class windlass. I like the freefall feature on the powerwinch but got turned off on the reviews on the west marine website. I fish in 20-60 ft of water is there a need for a freefall type? I own a seaswirl 2600WA Striper. Thanks Joe

Re: electric windlass

Joe - I don’t have access to my issues of Powerboat Reports right now, but they did a review of several windlasses in diff price ranges last year. I think it might have been three articles total. A lot about the manf’s specs were exaggerated, i.e. pulling speed and pulling lbs often didn’t test anywhere near what the manf’s claimed. Some windlasses are definitely better than others, and no one manf stood out with products that met spec in all size categories.

If someone else on the forum here doesn’t have the info from Powerboat Reports, you might want to consider purchasing the article from them. I think you want the July 2005 issue, windlasses under $1000. Bottom-line: Maxwell HRC 8 was PBR’s choice for a horizontal windlass, and Quick’s Crystal 1000 was top pick for a vertical windlass, in the under-$1000 category.

Feb 2004 - first round evaluation of under-$1000 windlasses
July 2005 - under-$1000 windlasses evaluated, includes results from Feb 2004 testing
Sept 2005 - vertical windlasses evaluated
Dec 2005 - horizontal windlasses evaluated
