Hello. Does the 68 Mercury 200 have a battery charging system? Is the attached wiring diagram correct? I'm having a tough time finding a diagram that I can confirm is the correct one.

I'm trying to use this as a tiller with the remote box, so I want to install a push-button starter switch.

Also, is there a recommend type of wiring for outboard applications? Much of the wiring needs to be replaced. I've heard you shouldn't just go to the hardware store and get indoor wire, but I haven't heard what is correct for an application like this. I'm assuming it has to do with the insulation.

Lastly, my tilt lock doesn't engage when in neutral or reverse. If anyone has pics of how it should be engaging, that would help. The parts diagrams I find online help, but they don't show it working. I will be working on this when I get home and am hopeful I'll just be able to figure it out.

Thank You

The 68 model likely had no room under the flywheel for a charging coil.----

This was my assumption, but wanted to confirm with a proper wiring diagram. Any ideas where I can find an accurate one? I found a website with lots of wiring diagrams. Which of the ones from the attachment do you think would be correct?

Here's where my confusion comes in. I can start this with the pull start without having to switch anything to a run position. However, any wiring diagram I look at says the key needs to be in the run position when starting it with the electric starter via the remote control box. I'm wondering why it needs to be in a run position. I thought that maybe the run position allows it to charge when using the electric start with the remote control box.

I can currently start it with the electric start by bypassing the starter solenoid. I feel like I could rig it up to do this indefinitely, but I'd like to bring this as close as possible to it's original operating functionality.

Thanks

The motor does not need 12 volts to run.----Just needs 12 volts for the starter to crank it over.-----Most outboard have a stop switch / button to short the ignition to ground to stop them.
