Is there a FAQ here anywhere that explains the various electrical components and their purpose?

I was thinking things like amplifier, clipping circuit, blocking diode, rectfier, stator, etc.

Re: Electrical Component Explanation

You are on the wrong site for that kind of stuff.

I dont think so. Those are all used on boat engines and Im sure Im not the only person who wonders what all these parts do as we are troubleshooting/replacing them.

Re: Electrical Component Explanation

Then post your question in the "electrical" section for electrical items and in the specific engine section (Johnson/Evinrude, Yamaha/Suzuki, Honda, Mercury etc) for engine components. If you have an I/O it should go in the I/O section.

You can google or yahoo search virtually any term known to man for answers to those types of questions. Use the term "marine" or "outboard xxxxxx" when you present the question in searches.

If you really want to know about your engine, order a service manual specific to your engine from the manufacturer. You will need it anyway since you intend to do service work yourself and it also describes precisely how each engine system works and how to troubleshoot and repair/replace those items. Without one you will spend countless hours on this forum getting bits an pieces as you learn what is what and in the process you screw things up worse than they were when you started.

Service manual is on the way, but they dont always explain things so a lay person understands it. Just thought maybe there would be a FAQ here somewhere related to electrical components.

I have posted several questions in relation to my engine and have received some very good answers that have helped me tremendously in understanding how my OB works.

You asked a very general questions that didn't indicate whether you were even working on an engine.

I'll say it again: If you want to learn how amps, clippers, and the like work, then you need to look at the appropriate source of information as these components are used in every facet of life and are not limited to marine applications.

Re: Electrical Component Explanation

Whether I am working on an OB is irrelevant to my initial question. I simply asked if there was a FAQ here anywhere. A simple no would have sufficed, but instead I got lectures.

Re: Electrical Component Explanation

Ahhh - another satisfied customer. People are simply way to sensitive these days. They ask a question and when they don't get the answer they expected they get huffy. You asked a question on a marine-specific forum. You included some terms that are are not necessarily marine specific and we tried to educate you on what you may and may not find here and where you might go to learn about those things. That sir is being helpful - not lectured. I don't know the policy today but service documentation when I was doing it was written for 8th grade comprehension levels. That's pretty basic stuff. To prepare you for a relationship with a boat, here are "systems" you need to research if you intend to work on your own boat.

Engine designs: Specificy the difference between a two-stroke and four-stroke.

Power Delivery: Outboard, inboard, I/O, and jet

Ignition Systems: Battery ignition and magneto

Electrical Systems: Alternator or Stator

Fuel System: Carbureted, EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection), DFI (Direct Fuel Injection.

Lubrication Systems: Pre-mix, oil injection, pressurized.

Except for power delivery, all of the systems mentioned above have been used in cars and trucks over the years. There are adaptations in the marine industry. Those are the things you will need to understand to be able to converse with us. We can help you over the hurdles but you need to help us help you. We are not a "Everything Marine 101" school. That stuff is in the books.

Re: Electrical Component Explanation

Do yourself a favor and just think of the parts you don't understand as "magical". What the "black box like thingy" does is much less important than if if it tests bad or good. Frankly I'm looking to learn less as I get older as I am finding that every new thing I learn is pushing out the memory of two old things I knew:)

I replaced my power pack, engine runs much better, don't care why.
To me its called boat-ing , not wrap my mind around the universe.;)
