electrical connector repair

Folks,

I picked up a 91 60hp evinrude for almost no $$ that I have been tinkering with for a while. Finally got around to firing her up and she runs well. I turned the switch off and she kept running. Long story short, the ground wire that runs to the power pack has broken off at the plug. In fact, all the wires at this connector are in bad shape with the casing becoming brittle. Any recommendations on repairing this plug? Do the pins individually push out and are they replaceable? I assume I can replace this piece of the harness, but the wires go up under the flywheel to the timer, and I'd rather not take the motor down that far. I think there is good wire I can tie into further up the harness.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks, Maury

Re: electrical connector repair

Lookup your motor on Shop2 Evinrude. The ground for the power pack has a ring sort of eyelet with star washer and screw into block. Maybe you're thinking of another wire in the connector/s. The connector housing and pins are seperate and can be replaced. Difficult push pins in and out. I used the thin piece of stainless steel found in windshield wiper blades, clamped into vise grips (wear leather gloves). Good luck!

Re: electrical connector repair

its the black with yellow stripe wire that is broken, not the black ground. Guess I wasn't clear. I sourced a couple of connectors from a local mechanic , pushed the pins out and will splice in the wire on all five pins on the power pack connector.

thanks for the help.
