Hello, I need some suggestions and explanations.
I own a Volvo Penta md5a, which runs without issues. But there seam to be some electrical issues. One is, alternator not charging.

First I would like to know what should happen when switching the starter key to position one and two, without starting the engine. As far as I know. Lights for AMP and Oil should light up. But what about the siren (beeper).

At the moment no lights come up, but the siren runs in both postions.

If I start the engine, the siren goes of.

The Lightbulps them selfs are fine. If I disconnect the AMP Light the siren stops.

What does this situation tell about the electrical status?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... The lights should only be powered by the light switch, not the key switch,.....

Hello Bondo,
thank you for your answer. I do only have one Key switch with three positions. 2 in which no lights are on, but the siren is beeping. And the third, which is startin the engine and moving back to pos. 2.

Are you referring to those 2 positions? Means control lights on at pos. 1 and off at pos. 2?

Ayuh,.... I'm sayin', it appears yer wirin' needs to be sorted out, as the gauge lights should be powered by a light switch, not the key switch, in any position,.....
If yer getting an alarm, I'm guessing the ignition is getting power, as it should,.....
Once started, the motor has oil pressure, 'n the alarm shuts off,....

Thank you Bondo,
but what you say is contrary to the manual, and what I experienced befor the issues. The wiring corresponds to the offical manual diagrams. The manual says, the oil and AMP light should light up before ignition and go out shortly after engine starting.
But it doesn't tell anything about pos. 1 or 2.

The alarm is only mentionend in combination with engin overheating... But as far as I know, it is the normal behavior to have it right before ignition.

Might be ok
With key ON and motor not running, there is no oil pressure and ALT is not working. Oil and ALT light would be ON along with beeper. Once motor starts, oil pressure comes up and ALT starts working and everything turns OFF

Thank you alldodge,
that's how it's supposed to be, presumbly But in my case, AMP (ALT?) nor Oil never lighting up. Not before, nor after ignition. What could that mean, beside broken lights?

One side of the lights should have 12V and the other side will be grounded by the oil pressure switch or Alternator. With key ON should see 12V on only one side, if ground is not being applied to the other then you will see 12V on both sides of the bulb

Hi, dillusion. I also have a MD5A on my boat and a similar issue. The siren and the oil lamp don't go on. I only get the AMP light before starting the engine. Engine runs fine and the light does go of after starting the engine. Did you find any solution as why both of your lamps don't go on?

Kind Regards
