I have a 14' boat with a 1986 Yamaha 40 (ELJ).
Recently the Tach went out, so I foolishly bought a new one from Telex and hooked it up. It also did not seem to work, so I figured it must be a problem with the sending function of the electrical system. I checked all the connections and fuses on the motor, and everything looked fine. I then went to start it again and it wouldn't even crank, although the lights did go on. So I checked all the connections again (including kill switch), including the battery, which I recently cleaned and reconnected (1 or 2 months). This time it started right up, (tach still not working). BUT, when I tried to shut it down (turned the key off), it kept running. I then pulled the kill switch, and it still kept running! Finally it died on it's own after about 30 seconds, before I had a chance to disconnect the fuel.

I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas where I might start. I think I should check all the connections in the remote control, but I wanted to see if there were any other possibilities before I start taking things apart. I did recently change the pulsar coils since one was bad, but I had a good 8hr day on the water after that repair.
