Electrical Problems at Remote control

I have a 14' boat with a 1986 Yamaha 40 (ELJ).
Recently the Tach went out, so I foolishly bought a new one from Telex and hooked it up. It also did not seem to work, so I figured it must be a problem with the sending function of the electrical system. I checked all the connections and fuses on the motor, and everything looked fine. I then went to start it again and it wouldn't even crank, although the lights did go on. So I checked all the connections again (including kill switch), including the battery, which I recently cleaned and reconnected (1 or 2 months). This time it started right up, (tach still not working). BUT, when I tried to shut it down (turned the key off), it kept running. I then pulled the kill switch, and it still kept running! Finally it died on it's own after about 30 seconds, before I had a chance to disconnect the fuel.

I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas where I might start. I think I should check all the connections in the remote control, but I wanted to see if there were any other possibilities before I start taking things apart. I did recently change the pulsar coils since one was bad, but I had a good 8hr day on the water after that repair.

Re: Electrical Problems at Remote control

hello
check all your ground circuits. make sure all the black wires are clean and tight at the block and in the control box. the test the tach you should have 12 volts between the black and yellow with the key on. I cant remember what the volts on the green lead is but use the ac scale and rev the motor up and down. you shoulkd see a varying voltage on the green lead. the engine ign system is isolated from the charging so you may have two problems. fix the kill circuits first and you may find a bad ground that is affecting the tach circuit as well
good luck and keep posting

Re: Electrical Problems at Remote control

OK, I checked all the wiring and did some troubleshooting with the voltmeter and found a weak/bad ground connection that was causing the remote control problem. that's now fixed, but the tach still does not work. It only uses the green send from the remote, and a ground. I checked the volts on the green wire while the motor was running and I don't get a thing. I checked all the way back to the lighting coil under the flywheel and get nothing. I suspect the lighting coil is bad, I think it got a little scraped up when I changed out the stator assembly, and the tach hasn't worked since.

Does the lighting coil serve any other function besides sending to the tach? Most of my electronics and running lights are powered straight off the battery.

Will a few cut coils stop the lighting coil from working?

Thanks in advance for any help...

hello
yes
the lighting coil provides the ac for the rectifier to rectify to DC and charge the battery. yes cut coils may have a tendancy to not work.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks for the tip rodbolt...I've ordered a new lighting coil.

Can you clarify the difference in purpose between the charge coil and lighting coil?

Re: Electrical Problems at Remote control

hello
the lighting coil provides an A/C current for the rectifier to convert to DC for battery charging . the charge coils provide an A/C current to the CDI where it is rectified and stored in the circuitry for use as coil primary input voltage. basically one is for powering up the ign and the lighting powers the battery charging .
good luck and keep posting
