I have a 78 ebbtide with 4cyl gm andmercruiser outdrive. alot of times you can turn the engine over and it wont start, you can jiggle the shifter and it will start up. most of the time before boating you can spray wd 40 on what i was told is some kind of interruptor switch on the back of motor almost on the transome. if you dont spray the switch it kills the motor. Is there any wayto clean the switch adjust it or just buy a new one. I appreciate any input you guys might have.

Re: electrical problems

I have seen a few of those shift interrup switchs that had a lot of old grease on them the caused them to stay engaged to long and would kill the engine. Might try cleaning all the old grease from the switch (Be VERY careful) those switches are no longer available.

Re: electrical problems

thank you for your input. how would you clean the switch if it was yours, clean rag or a type of degreaser that you can spray.

Ayuh,...

I just posted your answer on the other thread you posted on,....

Your Lower Shift Cable is Junk,+ Needs replacing....
It's only Supposed to engage that Switch when coming Out of gear, Not going Into gear....

In other words,... The Switch is working Perfectly.......
It's the Lower Shift Cable that's the Problem.......
