I have a 1984 115hp evinrude that had some electrical problems in the wiring harness. It had two wires burnt and touching. I fixed this problem but now my tach doesn't work, any suggestions? Does the tach run off the coil packs?

Re: electrical problems

On my 90 200hp it runs off a tach sensor that can go bad. I was told to move my tack wire over to one of the yellow wires in CDI box

This is for a 1990 not ness. the same as yours

Eric

Re: electrical problems

Hello Biggwolfe,
The tach. works off of the rectiffier. It counts electrical pulses. The grey wire that is hooked to the rectifier is the sensor for the tach. it hooks to the terminal that the yellow/grey that comes from under the flywheel hooks to to. If the rectifier is bad the tach. won't work, also the battery won't recieve a charge.
Good luck

Re: electrical problems

One test you can try is to measure dc voltage across battery terminals with engine idling. If it's 12.7 vdc or less, the rectifier may be bad. If it's 13.5 vdc or >, then the rectifier is OK. If you have a shop manual (to identify the terminals), measure the ac voltage to the recifier from the stator. If it's > 18 vac, then the rectifier is almost certainly bad, if it's dc out is < 12.7 vdc.
