1992—150 hp Evinrude

Spayed “corrosion block” around starter solenoid, must have shorted out connections. Manual states that all connections should have “OMC black dip” applied, found all were bare/uncoated connections.

Started engine, smoke from around starter solenoid area, turned off engine.
Entire area HOT to the touch, after cooling, NO RESPONSE when key turned when attempt to start.

Removed starter, Solenoid tests erratic, from 14.5---8.9 M-ohms to O-ohms.
Original starter always turned “slow”, will replace both the starter and solenoid.

Anything else to check? Gear is DRY when reinstalling what is the recommended lube?

Thanks for your advice

Mike

Sounds like all the symptoms lean towards a seizing starter motor or failing solenoid. Have the motor tested before changing. Solenoid sounds like it should be changed out if you get erratic resistance. Be sure all connections (battery, sol., and starter) are clean and tight first. Lube bendix with the lightest oil you got.
Good Luck
