Electrical system replacement - Holiday

Ok guys so I have decided to replace the entire electrical system in the Starcraft this year. Last year, the very first time I took this boat out I had a small electrical fire! Then a few weeks later I had a battery short out! So I did what I could last year to patch things up and get back on the water. This year I?m not taking any chances.

I?ve already removed all the wiring as well as the main dash panel because that was beginning to rot. I am in the process of making an electrical schematic for the boat and I will share that with everyone when I?m done. Bare with me on the drawing as that is one of those project I will have to force myself to complete.

I plan on making a new dash panel from ?? white acrylic if I can find a freebie scrap piece, if not it will be starboard. No more wood! I will also be converting to tilt steering as I do most of the driving standing up and the tilt makes that much more comfortable. The first problem I have run into with the tilt steering is that it protrudes out from the dash an additional 1.5? ? 2? more than the original steering. To offset this I will make a recessed portion in the center of the dash that will set the steering back 1.5?. In the pictures below you can see a test sample I cut out of ?? Formica laminated luan on a CNC router. You can see the cut-out for the steering and the two spacers I made to set back the steering mechanism mounting surface. This is pretty close to what the final piece will look like except I will use smaller screws so that they are less visible.

The Tach, trim gauge and 12V outlet will be on the left and the battery guage will be on the right. The fuel and hour gauges are on a separate panel and I will leave those alone for now as that panel is in good shape. The switch panel will go in the empty space you see on the right side. I can?t wait to show you guys the switch panel, it?s gonna be something special! Its about three weeks out though so you?ll just have to wait to see it.;)

I also ran into another problem with the steering system, the bolts supplied with the steering helm are about two inches short? I?ll have to scrounge something up to replace those. Once I get that figured out I?ll fit the assembled panel in place on the boat to make sure everything fits and I have good visibility of the gauges.

Any way more to come, I hope to have this all complete by 4/24. I?m getting the rest of the parts on order this week. Then I will chip away at this when I can, the wife is in school full time and works part time right now so I?m on baby duty a lot! Bear with me as progress might be slow but I?m excited about this project and I think the end result will be great.

Looks nice so far. Thanks for posting it. I've been kinda half-assing mine so far electrically. I'm about to install some gauges and a fish finder and it may be time to take the time to do it right with a fuse panel and what not. Check out my SS thread to see the sweet multi-function gauge I just ordered.

Nice find! HHHmmmm I will have to keep that in mind for round two of my mission to remove all wood from my boat, for now I'm going to leave the fuel and hour gages where they are.

I like it!

nice work so far Sam! one dumb Q: the dash is usually the last part of the wood to rot....if it's rotted, are you sure your transom and floors are OK?

yes I have inspected all the wood on this boat carefully. I think the previous owner slacked a little when it came to the dash. It doesnt look like the wood was ever sealed with anything. Also it was covered with vinyl and the vinyl had a tear in it allowing water to get behind it and get trapped there.

I did a complete rewir on my 22 ft Holiday and made a diagram of it. I wired everything to a fuse block then off to the items of use. If you are interested I could Fax it to you. just private mail me and ill make it happen I do this with every boat I have owned the last 20 years. Pugetsound

thanks Puget, I think I'm pretty well along on mine now just finishing up the details. When I do post mine feel free to comment on any mistakes i might make, I'm no electrician or ABYC tech (yet, hopefully one day).

I can't say I've done it for every boat but I agree with you, I do like to have a diagram to go with the electrical system. I usually keep a copy tucked away on the boat somewhere just in case something happens and I'm scrathing my head saying "what does this wire do?"

I'm still ordering parts Hopefully most of them should be in before this weekend. I'll keep you guys posted.

So just a few updates...
I have recieved a few items but still waiting on the rest. Here is what I got so far.

Fuse block, bus bar and automatic bilge pump. This pump uses a solid state water sensor so there is no float switch to jam, perfect!

I'm still waiting on another fuse block, a relay, a battery switch and some inline fuse holders. I will be picking up the wire this week, as well as the acrylic for the finished dash. The switch panel may be ready this week also.

I did test fit the dash, and it was a pretty big failure haha. I don't have enough room to set back the helm as i originally intended. The tilt mechanism causes the helm to extend out the back of the dash even more than standard fixed steering. I will go back to mounting it flush on the top surface, it will extend out about 1.5" more than the fixed steering but its not a big deal. I was able to test the tilt mechanism and it was great! It makes driving standing up much more comfortable.

I will also have to adjust the position of all the gages as I do not have good visibility while standing up. The top part of the dash overhangs too much and blocks my view. I will move the gauges lower on the dash that way I can see them better.

Hope fully I can actually make some real progress by the end of next weekend.

Re: Electrical system replacement - Holiday

haha I guess thats just a perk of my job, sure makes life easy.

I will be installing a new fish finder with this eledtrical system but the old transducer was mounted to an old rotted piece of wood. To replace it I was able to find a piece of 1" thick G10, this will never rot or absorb moisture and I won't even have to paint it. I am only using this because it was free, normaly this stuff is way too expensive and overkill for this job but it will be the last time I ever have to mess with this transducer mount. You can see how the old wood piece was deteriorated and actually split.

Re: Electrical system replacement - Holiday

So I finished the wiring 2-3 weeks ago already but I haven't been able to take any pictures yet, hopefully this week. I was finally able to go out and catch some fish on 2 occasions.

Anyway, for now I have attached the wiring diagram I promised.
