Anyone ever use / know where to buy a sticky tape to hold wiring in place where you don't want holes?
Any suggestions on a better product / method for holding a few wires out of the way?
Tape I removed was about 1" wide, foil backed with ~1/16" black sticky rubber which sticks like crazy.
Searched the forum, looked at West Marine but with no luck. Lots of good electrical wiring advice though - thanks all.

i kindasorta know what your talkin' about.
it's not a electrical supply.. it's a hvac duct supply...

if'n you can't find it... get some 'sticky backs' available at radio shack.. stick them to a surface,,, then use a plastic ty-rap....

Sounds like DynaMat. That stuff is really sticky, but it comes in 16" wide rolls.

Jeff

Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

Dad had some in his garage and I took a chunk of it. Stuck it to side of hull in alum utility fishing boat. It works great to stick lures into so they don't fall on the floor.

I believe he got it from an RV store, they had him use it to span some gaps/cracks in his old camper before water sealing was performed.

It's a tape for the HVAC industry. Usually called hardcast. Sticky as the ****ens, and will pull the side out of a jail before it lets go. I see you are in the Pac NW. Try Gensco Inc.

Thanks all for the replies!

Jeff - Dynamat sounds like it - I found a similar product and have a 1sq ft sample on the way for $3.
http://www.fatmat.com/samples/index.htm

Just want to use a couple of small pieces to hold loose wiring under the dash and this should work great.

Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

MJC-
sounds like a dirt and grime magnet under your dash.
If that doesnt work for you, then try going to walmart or radio shack and buying some plastic spiral wire loom. In auto elect. section at walmart, its $1.50 or so for 6 feet and you simply spiral it onto the wires that run under your dash and it holds them neatly together. Makes a "haywire" type situation under your dash turn into a few 1/2" diameter organized strands. Then you can also buy some self adhesive plastic clasps that would attach to surface of boat and hold the wire looms out of the way ( I think they are $.99 for 6 at walmart.) I used this in my recent rewiring job and it made the underside of my dash a LOT neater and more organized. Good Luck

Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

Beaux -
Are you refering to the fatmat product specifically? I don't know exactly what it is but it sounded close to what I pulled off. If so, it does not collect dirt and grime. The sticky side is a thin rubber which is covered by a foil face. The two peices I took off were about 1" x 2" each and were doing a great job of holding a couple of cables from a FF to the underside of the dash.
I prefer not to place any wires in any type of wire loom or enclosed conduit unless it is totally sealed (possible moisture problems?)
I may try the adhesive pads which have the loops on them as well. How well do those type of pads hold?
Thanks

Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

MJC-
I am not familiar with the pads you guys are referring to. I cant help you there. I was just giving you another option in case you can't find what you are looking for. The loom that I am talking about will not hold water/moisture in as it is literally a hollow spiral shaped piece of plastic which means it has open air throughout the length of it. It is not like the loom that most auto wiring runs thru which is a solid tube of plastic with a single lengthwise split in it to put the wires into it. No moisture would collect in the spiral loom I am referring to. It just bundles wires together into a neat strand. Anyway, Good luck with your boat. BTW- it looks like this but it black.
Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

MJC
the sticky pads tend to let go if they have a pull of any kind against them or if they get wet and it soaks into the backing.
Richard

Re: Electrical wiring sticky tape

i always put alittle SUPER GLUE to just the 4 corners of the 'sticky back' then stick on as always.. the 'sticky' still sticks & the superglue keeps it there...
