Electro Mechanical Tilt Volvo 280

My volvo leg will not raise. The electric motor makes all the right noises, but nothing happens. Coincidentaly (or perhaps related) I need to hold the override button in to activate the tilt now. Previously only needed to press it once to reset the cut-out device. Can anyone help as here is Western Australia, help on this matter is not easy to find at all.<br /><br />I know there must be someone out there who will know exactly what the problem is, I just need to find them. Hi gmoore,<br /><br />There is 3 seperate sections of the tilt system you may need to test. The electric motor, relays & wiring, worm gears.<br /><br />The electric motor is the most common culprit (making a noise but not working is common).<br />Remove it and test it on a work bench in a vise.<br /><br />When the motor is removed you can put a screwdriver inside the hole and manually raise or lower the leg. If the screwdriver trick works then your worm gears are o/k.<br /><br />May I suggest a manual, they have good 'exploded' views of the tilt system. Clymer B770 covers your outdrive and tilt, its more than adequate. A genuine manual for a leg so old is probably a waste of money.<br /><br />P.S. You are absolutely astute CPO. The profile should read 140 ponies, not 240.

gmoore, Aldo is correct. The motor should be taken of the tilt unit and tested for rotation in both directions. The brush assembly in these motors is a little weak, but there are replacement parts available. If the motor checks out, check your ground connections in the boat where the trim unit grounds, and also make sure your battery is good and connections are clean. Low voltage will cause these motors to underperform. If connections are good, and motor seems to spin well, but the tilt does not lift(or lower) try tightening or loosening the cover on the tilt screw housing with a large wrench or locking pliers. You may need to add or remove a shim as well, depending on the condition of the spring inside. Keep posting. These units are fussy sometimes, but can be brought back to service.<br /><br /><br />Good luck, David

Thanks Aldo, and thanks Dave. I will give all the tips a try until I see that leg move. Last thing I want to do is amputate my leg and fit a pod & OB Eng, but if the old penta keeps giving me the screaming jets I may have to consider it.
