Another bidder on a 65 Johnson 33hp asked the seller if the unit had Electromatic/Electric shift. No it doesn't sez the seller.

I'm not familiar with this terminology.

Is this something akin to an automatic tranny in a car ?

How does it work ?

Thanx..

Re: Electromatic/Elect shift ?

Some of the OMC outboards in the 60s-70s had an electrically or electric/hydraulic shift mechanism. None of the 33 hp models did.

They worked fine, but are hard to repair today, since parts are next to unobtainable. I someone has we, they can get repair advice here. If someone's looking at one, thinking about buying, the best advice is to keep looking for a manual shift outboard.

if it has the shift lever on the starboard side it is a mechanical shift, which is good.
