Re: Electronic Conversion Kit?
View attachment 167241View attachment 167241I have a 1988 Bayliner with a 5.7 OMC engine.
Have only had the boat out 2 times. It idles rought and lack power, have tried to adjust dist. advance and will not run, until the dist. is advanced to between 15 to 20 degree, before top dead center, not like it should be at 8 degrees before top dead center. It has had the camshaft replaced but have know idea what one.
I have replaced the plug wires, spark plugs, has a new carb. on it.
The stock dist. has been converted to electronic ignition( have sent picture of conversion unit, no brand name, only painted number on it looks like 167 or 197). I have heard that electronic conversion kits are some times not compatable
with the OMC engines with the shift assit module, which my boat has.
Could this be my dist. advance problem, and running problem.
Also any idea what brand of electronic conversion kit I have. Don't see any on the WEB sites like it.
Thanks for any help.
Howdy,
I don't think there's many of us that can speculate on what you have either.
If the previous owner told you a story, there's no way to verify cam timing without pulling the timing cover and checking that it's timed correctly yourself.
Could this be my dist. advance problem, and running problem.
Absolutely.
If the distributor has been modified (electronic "points", different advance curve, etc) and you cannot identify what it is, you may have to go back to an OEM points type system just to get it to run right. (remember that the points type system was reliable, easy to set up & fix, and parts are still readily available.)
If it's a Pertronix system, they actually HAVE a suggested "fix" to get it to work with an OMC ESA (although I don't know if it would work with a different system)

Without closely inspecting your engine, most of us would be unable to make specific suggestions because in the last 24 years, EVERYTHING OEM (ignition, timing, camshaft, etc) could have been changed to something unrecognizable or unworkable.
The last engine I had that required the distributor to be turned a LOT to get it to run right, had a timing-chain "jump" several teeth because the chain and gears were so SEVERELY worn out.
(I also had a Pertronix system installed........It made no difference in running when compared to the original points)
I would suggest that you:
1. remove the timing cover and verify cam timing.
2. get a known distributor (or "Fix" yours and verify the mechanical advance system by having an auto electric place run it on a dist machine so you KNOW the advance curve is correct for your engine)
3. Make sure your fuel system is set up correctly. (fuel tank, vent, pick up screen, anti-siphon filter, pump, carburetor, etc)
4. Have a look at the "ADULTS-ONLY sticky" above and compare your running problems to the supplied FAQ
