Electronic ignition or Points best for 3.0L Merc?????????????

I got a 87' 3.0l mercruiser and have had problems with my points ignition system. The boat cuts out and pops and cuts up under thottle skipping off and on, it will clear out and then come right back, seems to idle alright. I was told it could be water in the gas. Thinking about just going to electronic like the pertonix , anybody had any better luck or anybody think this is a bad move. let me know your thoughts , thanks matthew

Ayuh,... If you have Water in the fuel,... You change the filters,+ remove the Water from the fuel system....

What's changng the distributer got to do with the Fuel System,..??

What is "cuts up" and "skipping off an on"?

Get the water out of the tank,Install a water seperating filter and rebuild the carb.

I was ready to answer your post by recommending going to electronic ignition. But you obviously need to fix the problem you are currently having first. THEN you can consider going to the Pertronix as it is more consistent in my opinion. But no sense in adding a layer of complexity to diagnosing your current issue by simply adding electronic ignition.
