well I just installed the presolite electronic ignition !
Just wanted to say that it kicks butt ! the ole 470 fired right up and ran like a champ idled great and smooth . I was having alot of problems with the points and decided to give this a shot and it worked out great! i just wanted to share this with whoever needed a little help leaning towards the electronic rather than points it was the best investment !

Re: electronic ignition

Thanks for the info.

I've been reading up on the subject a lot lately. I know that there was some debate on the subject on here, but it's good to hear from those that have made the switch. I just ordered the Pertronix kit last night actually. I'm excited to try it out. I have a new (new to me) Mercruiser 233 that runs a little rough at higher throttle settings. I'm not sure that the new ignition will solve all of my issues, but it will be nice to have a simplified system to troubleshoot.

I should ask, did you replace the coil at the same time?

A lot of naysayers out there re the Pertronix but your experience verifies exactly what I tell people when they ask about converting. I hope you got the Blaster coil to go with it? And I hope you got the Pertronix II otherwise do NOT forget to turn your ignition key off when the motor is not running.

Re: electronic ignition

i fought the urge to change over for a while, but finally decided to go pertronix last summer. my experience so far is that the boat doesn't start any quicker, but it does idle smoother. and it seems to pull a little harder when accelerating. no top end speed gain. i also went with the FT2 coil. i keep the old parts in the boat 'just in case'.

Re: electronic ignition

About this electronic distributor system, what about the ignition amplifier, is this still required?? rebuilding a 3.8L mercruser engine, almost ready to fire it up with a electronic dist. input needed??

Re: electronic ignition

Completely differnt engine and distributor. He has an inline 4 cylinder Mercruiser only engine.
You have a GM. BIG difference.

So stop posting to every old post you can find.
