elephant trunk drain?

Anyone install an elephant trunk drain on their sib? I strap my battery down to my bench top when operating around major surf, my electrical connections are tucked up high under my console and I have a bucket for serious bailing. Those little one way drains in the zodiac don't suck out water very fast and are prone to clogging. If the motor is still running after getting swamped a bit it would be nice to have the boat drain quickly. Overkill? Other issues? Suggestions (other than avoid being pimped)?

I wonder if you can have an open transom design and have a part open transom like the ones on the cats or maybe add 2 of the one way drain and don't use the pluge what are the elephant trunk drain?

My boat has 3 passive transom drains that I leave open all the time when underway and the pump takes up the slack when I swamp it, and I swamp it alot. It's not an instantaneous drain like a self-bailer, but it empties it quick enough to get ready for the next rapid. This is the best option I could think of for the type of boat it is. Clearly if you think you're going to be swamping frequently, a self-bailer is the only way to go.

"Elephant trunk drain" = Drain sock for rescue/military inflatables

Unless you are using your boat in heavy surf it would be a waste of time. When deployed, it basically allows a large volume of water out in a hurry, Unfortunately it allows a small amount water back in constantly.

Yes, I am cruising through some ridiculous surf (overhead waves). Watched a big Boston Whaler get swamped by a large set wave that swung wide over the shelf off Point Loma. I really like the bilge pump set up shown by Drowned Rat, but am looking for a really quick water drain that isn't going to be susceptible to clogs. I recognize that an elephant trunk drain only works if the boat is underway. Not much help if the engine dies. But they sure do move alot of water if you are in motion. I posted on ribnet and got a bunch of responses from individuals who use them. Pretty hard to clog up a big opening like the 4" drains on some of the boats discussed. Heck, My small zodiac one way drains leak water back into the boat if left open at rest and they are a royal pain to reach. Clearly not a good option in a major swamp situation. Oh well, the inflatable isn't forever... Thanks to all for the replies. Still wish my boat was nice, clean and relatively new like Drowned Rats!

But this photo was taken before the boat even saw the water. Still in fabrication. She's not quite as shiny new as she was.

Classic. I sure wish my boat was a cat so I could just cut big holes in the transom! My buddies get annoyed with me for driving around at full throttle all the time already. Dang, I would probably have a hard time getting anyone to go out with me if I had your rig! "Before we board here is your life jacket and mouthguard..." Hmm, I might have to go look back at your wave jumping posts... any new water shots?

Hahahaha, nope i don't have any new ones, I haven't raced in a while, I am on racing retirement, my back and neck is giving me too many problems nowadays, I am not 21 anymore .... hahahahaha

Oh that is sweet. I wouldn't have any problem popping up on a single ski with a 90 for sure! Since you aren't racing and jumping waves what are you doing for fun? Zipping about and running circles around us pedestrian boaters? Any issues regarding the weight of the motor? Does it exceed the transom weight specified for the boat? You are sooo right, if I had that motor my buddies would paddle rather than ride!

For fun these days, I am spending time with the wife, it is not that bad hahahahaha ..... Here is South Africa there is no issues with max weight or max hp on a boat .... you can put a 200hp on a 12ft dingy if you wanted and no one would care, if you can get it to work then it is good to go hehehe ....
