1952 elgin 5 hp. i just bought rings for it, because the compression was low (only 45 psi each cylinder). Where do i begin to change them? Never worked on something this old. Ive got the cylinder head, i guess you call it, the gas tank and the flywheel off. Thanks

Hi, Kyle.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Rings are probably not going to do you any good, Kyle.

You have a rope start outboard. 45psi is not a bad reading, particularly if the cylinders match.

If you want to change the rings you ought to dig up a Service Manual because you will need to tear it down completely to get at them. You will also need a complete gasket set and detailed instructions on torque readings, etc.

Were it mine I would make sure she has a good water pump and a clean carb, check for good spark, and put her in the water where she belongs. I don't think she needs a rebuild.

Good luck. :)
