Elgin Questions

hello. I have searched this site, and the internet and run out of places to look<br />I have been given a 3.5 Elgin motor<br />Model on plate states 574-60021<br />serial 63600310-2443<br />I have the " Old Outboard Motor" manaul , and of course my engine isnt in there.<br />Any help informing me of where to find a manual is appreciated.. and also I am really trying to find out the oil ratio and the gap for the plug too.. <br />The engine runs great considering it has been in storage for 8 yrs.. but I would like to take it out for a spin soon!~<br />any help is appreciated!!!

Elgin's run fine with a 50:1 fuel/oil mixture. Richen it up a bit if you like, but expect more smoke. I had my plugs gapped at .030 with good results, though I am not sure what the book says. They're fun motors, enjoy it.

The Elgin's run good with the typical 50:1 mixture. Richen it up if you like, but expect more smoke and harder starting. On my 5 hp, I used a .030 gap for the plugs and never had a problem, though I don't know what the manual says. Manual may be hard to find, do the Ebay thing I guess. Those are fun motors, enjoy it.

Hi Jeff<br />My list does not cover elgins as new as yours. so I don't know the year. I would guess it is a sixties model. Your elgin was made by Mc Culloch. Elgin is a Sears brand name like Craftsman. I'll bet your old outboard manual has a few pages concerning Scott-Atwater, Scott-McCulloch.
