Bought a old boat & motor..... (Both have been sitting for years)... The motor has good compression... very clean... I can't get it to go into neutral(prop does'nt disengage when you shift the lever to neutral).... Any ideas as to whats wrong or maybe ......???? The boat is a 1964 Lone Star 14' aluminum... I'm going to strip the paint off and repaint... any suggestions for resealing the seams while I'm at it?? mikeAZ

Your motor is a 1959, made by West Bend. I'm not smart enough to know if yours has a neutral clutch or a full Forward-Neutral-Reverse gearshift.

If it is a neutral clutch, the lever pulls upward on a release cable going to the lower unit. There will be a thin metal cover clip on the forward edge of the leg, just above the lower unit. Pry the cover off and the release cable is then exposed and you will be able to see if it is moving, or out of adjustment, or disconnected, or whatever.

Thanks, It's a forward/neutral motor... No reverse... While it's old, It has good compression and not a grease ball... actually LOOKS pretty good for it's age. Mike

OK, check the cable connector behind the steel clip. The shifter lever pulls the cable up to put it in neutral. Or is it the other way around? Hey, I can't remember everything!!!
