I just got 2 engines today
engine 1 is a 75 hp elgin 3 cylinder 2 stroke
engine 2 is a 45 hp elgin 2 cylinder 2 stroke

I need help finding model #'s/ serial #'s and year so I can order parts
I also have a feeling that these are classics and possibly very desirable by others with old boats.

so far I found numbers in 2 locations on the 75 hp..
location 1 is on the flywheel:
wico ignition division
globe-union
patent 2,756,365 & 2,979,312

location 2 is on the piece the distributor bolts to.
6660754*
*=some strange imprint that I can not identify
and a "Q" down below that by itself

I am including pics so maby one of you can tell me anything about these.
I am a good mechanic but these are my first outboards ever. so it is almost like starting over again.

Both motors are froze up from sitting and before I put a wrench on them, I want to find out more about them

Even I can see the data plate on the motor in the 1st pic! Small plate riveted to the leg between the pivots. It appears to have been painted over at some point. The other motor may have it in the same location since they look like they're from the same era.

In the last pic the 75 appears to have been overheated if the original color on the block was white.

Yup---that'll get your attention and is the reason I stick with under 10 hp.;)

Er---have you considered seeing what Sears has on it in their parts website?:D

Here's a couple of pages devoted to Elgin.

<http://www.yankeeaomci.org/feature_outboard-2.htm>

<http://www.elginoutboards.org/>

It's a Scott/McCulloch built motor by the 574 prefix. I'll let you see if if you can figure out more from the websites than I could.
