I have been having thoughts about eliminating the oil injection sysem on my 89 V6 150HP Mercury Black Max. Presently of course I put the oil in the reservoir and let the pumps do the mixing, so not sure what I would have to do to eliminate the sysem. I understand the limitations of having to carry extra oil to add to the fuel tank, etc.

If I mix the oil in with the fuel in the fuel tank at 50:1, is there going to be a problem? Any suggestions or advice on doing this?

Thanking everyone in advance for the advice...I have had many questions answered here previously...and can't tell everyone how helpful most of the advice has been. Not sure I could have gotten this far without the information provided here.

I took mine off and have not had problems....I mix 50:1......you just need a fuel line from the fuel tank to the water separator, then a hose with a ball to the engine......good to go!

I have a 1987 myself.
A mercury mecanic advised me to remove the oil injection and use mixed fuel, because the crankshaft driven
oil pump and its plastic driven gear on the crankshaft is a weak point in these engines.
He said, do this and it will run almost forever.
If you do, be sure to use the blindplug set ment for this removal of the oilpump.
This set is availible at most boat parts dealers,
its not expensive,I did this my self. part number OEM Mercury Mariner V6 Oil Block Off Kit : 43453T

If you choose to run with the oil injection system, be sure you use high quality(syntetic) oil,the cheap ones gets
bad trough storage, getting jelly and cloty, and can course bad oil feeding ,doesn`t help with
a well function mercury oil warning system then.

Forgot one thing:
If you remove the oil injection, also remove the oil warning module, the overheat alarm will still work, although you
will not get the "beeeeeep beep beep" when turning ignition ON.

I appreciate the informtion Iceman66, and I agree about 90% with you MI duckdown, I know I can't hear any of the warning sounds if the oil injection system mafunctions, and since the price for a quart of oil is the same whether it goes in the fuel tank or in the oil injection tank, I figured it doesn't really matter.

Re: Eliminating the oil injection system.

Just a thought: Why have Mercury made this block off kit after all?
Maybe the oil injection system with its warning solution
wasn`t that reliable as they thought ?

They sell a kit because several of their high performance motors come standard without the oil injection and the same parts you buy to remove the system are the ones they installed from the factory on the 260' 280 etc HP engines. The oiling system is quite reliable up to 6000 RPM.
If I bought a fishing motor up to 200 HP with the system removed, I would reinstall it.

Re: Eliminating the oil injection system.

The oil injection system dose not have to be removed and you still can mix oil in the tank by just putting a T fitting in the oil hose from the oil tank to the oil pump, and then put a hose from the oil pump discharge to that, T and plug the hose that you take off the discharge. This way the oil recirculates and everything can be put back if you ever sell the motor. You will still have to keep some oil in the oil tank and the warning module will stay the same. JMO

I like my 86 oil alarm system. I think if people understood how it worked they would leave it in place.
