How easy should this thing start, and where do I set the lean/rich knob? all the way open?.

Oh and how do I pop the flywheel off if it has no spark? like a Briggs and Stratton with a flywheel knocker?

If you got good spark and compression, and you have fresh gas to the carb, it should start in 2 or 3 pulls.

Put the gearshift in "neutral". Take the knob off and turn the needle in all the way, and then open it about 1 1/2 turns. When it starts adjust the needle so it runs smooth and then put the knob back on, positioned in the middle of the range.

I would guess that the coils in that era motor would still be good, but if not a gear puller will easily remove the flywheel.

Going to try to fire it up Saturday. It takes an external tank, which I have along with the OMC connector, so I should be able to get fuel to it.

If it has spark and compression it should start right up. If it doesn't then the first thing to do is clean/rebuild the carburetor (not difficult at all). If it doesn't fire right up, don't just keep yanking on the starter rope, you'll hurt yourself or the motor...those little light twins should be very easy to start.

They'll probably need new water pump impellers so don't run them long even if they do start.

Yeah, I'm going to make sure it has water circulation and replace the impeller before I use the motor. This motor probably runs fine. It's in good shape with decent paint and a recent service sticker. It probably hasn't set very long. The guy I got it from buys row boats for non power reservoirs, and rents/ sells them out of the reservoirs/ his 'lot' as well. So he separates the boats from the trailers and pulls off motors.. He didn't bother trying to run it, just priced it cheap to offload it. He has over 250 boats in his 'lot' alone

I have 2 'usable' identical props. They are plastic and not new by any means, but both appear in good enough condition to operate. A brand new aluminum prop is $100 but is the same 7.5x6 RH. Will it be at all more powerful with an aluminum prop?. The drift pram is not a planing hull ( slightly rockered ), but perhaps thinking more thrust out of an aluminum prop.

Is there any hope in trying to un stick the other Evinrude?

Pull the plugs and inspect the pistons. Oily or dry? Squirt some fogging oil in each hole. Put a strap wrench on the flywheel (not the rope starter) and gently try to turn it. If that doesn't work, fill the cylinders with PB blaster and let it sit a few days and then try again.

Then take it apart.

I had a stuck rude from that era and it turned out to be stuck impeller, not the powerhead. Maybe you'll be lucky.

hope I might get lucky. I don't need 3 small outboards. But why not.

Picked up a 1976 model 6 HP Evinrude recently.---Priced right with new coils.-----Not seized but took it apart anyway.-------Piston rings indicated that motor was barely broken in.------Corrosion found on the crank where a wee bit of condensation got in.-----Assembled it this morning with a good crankshaft.------Will go out the door with 1 year warranty.

How does the lower cowling on the 1982 4hp come off? J4BRHCNR is the model number. I got the lower cowling off. I can't get it to kick at all, even after spraying mix through the carb, which should have got a pop if something was there. So I have to get to the points/ coils now. It's a pretty clean unit but does have signs that it's been in the salt

Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more , yes or no ?----If no , then likely the points need cleaning.

I don't have a spark tester, or a spare plug to test with. I'm assuming the points need cleaned though

You have the lower cover off? Single screw front and back, I think. Maybe removal of a choke knob.

Lower cover I figured out. That is a single screw on each side plus choke and enrichment knobs.

I could be wrong but I don't think an '82 has points. I know for a fact that an '84 doesn't.

Just pull a plug, attach the wire and ground the threads on the block. Then pull the recoil starter. That's a poor mans's spark tester.

'82 has points for sure. the IPL's for the motor show them. IIRC '77-'83 is the year coverage, and then no points listed for '84

The 82 model 4 HP discussed here has the world famous " universal magneto "-----Used on many motors from 1950 and on and on.

I have a 1978 and 1979 4hp They both have CDI. . It seems for some reason they went back to points in 1981.

I'd imagine the old CDI's had some issues that they just threw the tried and true points/ mag setup back in for a few years until it was perfected..

I know I could install Nova II for the same cost as points
