This hunting season will be the first in 35 yrs without my Dad. At 84 yrs old he decided it was too much on him to travel up from FLA and live in a trailer without running water or electric in the winter. Not going to be the same. In two years my son will be out of the Maritime Academy and will be able to join me if he is not abroad. Was hoping to have all three of us together at once. Time marches on...

Always tough ... my first hunting season without Dad was difficult, but so many memories flooded all of our thoughts and every moment of every day was a trip down memory lane ... Dad did this here. Dad fell asleep here. Dad ran the boat aground here. Etc, etc, etc. Enjoy the memories you had hunting with him... take him with you, if only in your thoughts.

I do know how hunting trips make forever memories. My two sons and myself hunted together for decades. However, we all basically stopped hunting when finding a good safe place to hunt was getting harder and harder to locate each year. And the typical hunting clubs all seems to want members to help pay the lease, but the "good areas" were basically all covered up and new members were just paying the lease. And the fighting in those clubs were enough to drive anybody out. So we stopped and switched to fishing. And that is what we want to do now. But it doesn't matter if it is hunting or fishing, I would rather do either with my two adult sons then with anybody else. We do talk about the hunting memories lots of times. And the unique situations we seen together while in the woods. And one of the most memorable things they talk about was the food we cooked in the wood at lunch time. Those were the best tasting hamburgers we have ever eaten. I guess cooking in the woods makes things taste better IDK. So memories can still be make how ever things change in life. JMHO

There is no doubt that anything cooked in the woods tastes better, even a tin of beans or a slice of bologna! The only downfall for me is after those meals was always the time I would have the best smoke you could ever have. Now I'm quite for 14 years and that's the only smoke I still miss!

I know the feeling all to well, my love and appreciation of the woods, is because of my Dad, who I lost a little over a year ago, somehow being out in the woods has changed without Dad.

Sorry to hear of it Angus. I'm sure y'all can come up with some other ideas of things to do, but this change in and of itself will be a little bitter.

I gave up hunting a few years ago too. Moved across the state and don't have my brother to hunt with. Too expensive, too time itensive, too dangerous, too many city boys... Too lonely without the bro by my side. At 84, I probably won't want to shoot stuff either. Maybe I'm just getting soft early though.

Sorry you lost your partner. Maybe think of it as an opportunity to make new memories doing something else with him.
