End of the line Shaft won't stay connected

Here are the pics of my problem where the linkage is I need to remove this shaft.I bought a new coupling for 70.00 the splins where worn off it.It is connected to a rod that slids up, it has a flat on it you can feel it drop in place when you rotate it.But when you get the L/U in place it won't hold when you shift it will move into gear then want hold enough for it to move the shift shaft in L/U you can see the rod from the top spin freely when you shift with the lever control.With L/U out you can feel the lower rod with the new copling move also like its suppose too but when you mate them up and it goes up on this very easily no binding nowhere it just want hold.I need to know how do I get that shaft out without removeing the engine??

You can not, the powerhead must be removed

You got to be kidding me this has been a nightmare trying to figure this out.Theres no way to get that shaft to come loose and go through the bottom?Is there any way to know how to get it to stay with it on?

It takes less than 4 hours to change it I bet you have monkeyed more time than that trying to make it work without repairing it properly.

I would'nt say I was trying not to fix it properly.I was and I'm very good with repairing engines and other things but when you don't mess with boat engines on a regular basics you tend to ask questions.This is'nt even my boat I'm trying to help someone out,So with that being said could someone tell me what steps I need to take to get the power head out of the way to get to a shaft?And if you would had seen the splins in the coupling you would bought a new one thinking that should have taken care of the problem.

Not too big a deal to remove powerhead. You already did most of the work from the looks of those pictures, removing the shifting linkage and carb. You will need a lifting eye bolt tho. Just gotta remove your fuel line from the lower cowling, loosen all the wires that need to be loosened (I highly recommend taking lots of pictures of everything), remove the tell tale hose from the block, and the, what, like 8 nuts holding it to the driveshaft housing? Use a come along to pick it straight up move the boat forward and pull out the shift shaft. Don't go only by our words, buy a manual for it so you have a step by step. Most will insist you buy a factory manual but they're like 100 bucks. If I were you, I'd have the owner pay for a seloc manual (like 30 bucks) for you and you should be fine. I have both and the seloc lists all the necessary steps.

Thanks for the pics and replys I'm going to bite the bullet and get that thing off tomorrow.I'm so tierd of it not working.So with power head off I can just pull the rod straight up and viola'.From the prints off crowly marine sight it looks like there are splins at the end of rod I hope not .But I will update as soon as I find out thanks Laddie and merc man for the help

Btw, did you say you took the L/U off and looked at the splined shaft and saw that it was stripped, or did you feel it was slipping?

Yes the splined coupling was stripped out so bad when I bought that and installed it.I thought that was it and I was done with this one but the shaft(rod that you sweat the coupling too)moves out of its slot that makes it work.So now I have to dig into but weather is gloomy here and not in the mood and also I want to get more read up on the whole power head removal thing.Thanks again for all the replys
