Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time...a Canadian citizen headed home from vacation in Tunisia, picked up in NY, packed off to Syria for a year of torture...

partial quote from CNN.com:
TORONTO, Canada (AP) -- An inquiry into the U.S. transfer of a Canadian citizen to prison in Syria found Canadian authorities gave misleading information to the Americans that likely led to the deportation, a report released Monday said.

After his release in 2003, Syrian-born Maher Arar made detailed allegations about extensive interrogation, beatings and whippings with electrical cable in Syrian prison cells.

Arar was traveling on a Canadian passport when he was detained at a New York airport in September 2002 during a stopover on his way home to Canada from vacation in Tunisia. He claims he was a victim of extraordinary rendition -- or the transfer of foreign terror suspects to third countries without court approval.

Arar said U.S. authorities sent him to Syria for interrogation on suspicion of being a member of al Qaeda, an allegation he denied.

Canada's federal government established an inquiry in 2004 to determine the role Canadian officials played in the case of Arar, who has been cleared of any terrorist connections.

This story is so far off base, leave it to cnn.
Doesn't read like the story that the Canadians put out in their press release.

First off, the "story" is 2 years old, only in the news as of late, because he has filed suit against the authorities in Ottawa, for supplying the US with bad intel.

The US has no deal to send people to Syria. Syria is the last country on earth that would be working with the US to interrogate suspects.

The reason he was sent to Syria, is because he had dual citizenship, both Canadian and Syrian. Canada said they didn't want him, so he went to Syria.

No one knows, at this time, why he was held, tortured(maybe), and interrogated for a year by the Syrian gov't. But I suspect it was Syria that wanted intel out of him.

Canada now has admitted that its intel was faulty.

Good point JB...I thought "Enemy Combatant" made a better headline, but suspected "Al Qaeda terrorist" is even better.

The accusation suggests that under torture, the guy admitted to training with AlQaida in Afghanistan.

Unfortunately he had never even been to Afghanistan, and certainly no evidence he had ever trained, or even supported in any way, AlQaida.

And the point is it shows the value of torture in interrogating prisoners, in that you will get any info you want, whether any validity to it or not to it, as long as you are allowed to push hard enough.
