Re: eng doesn't stay running
Four years could be good or bad depending on what type of lay-up maintenance was perform. The books says after a motor has been sitting for, say six months or so.. to run the engine off Pre-mixed fuel (50:1) so as to verify the oil injection system is working properly. Doing so won't hurt, not doing so could possibly destroy the engine. Also running an engine just 5 seconds without water will damage the impeller, 60 seconds will cause considerable damage, and after 5 minutes - you no longer have an impeller. The lower unit can be removed without removing the engine from the boat. You'll need a gasket kit and a manual wouldn't hurt. There's more steps listed in the manual than I can type, but it says that in order to remove the pump, the driveshaft must be removed from the lower unit. In order to do that, you must remove the bearing carrier cap and pinion gear.
