Engine acting weird...

I have a 1989 Evinrude V6 150 HP that I just bought with my boat two months ago, and I'm not sure what's wrong with it or how to fix it. First, it takes several tries to get it started, and once it starts it may run for a while, then die when idleing, and once I get it restarted and put it in gear it dies. Once it finally decides it is going to run, it struggles. It can be at full throttle and barely be moving. What could be causing all of this and what can I do to correct these problems?

Old gas?

Gummed up carb?

Bad compression?

Fouled plugs?

Tank not vented?

Cylinder not firing/weak spark?

What have you checked?

Thats the thing, I don't know what to check or how to check any of those things. I bought it from a dealer back in march who gave me a 30 day warranty on the engine, and of course during that time everything worked fine. I know it's not old gas because I've ran through a couple of tanks. Spark Plugs were my first thought, but I wanted to get some other input on the situation to see what else it could be.
