Engine Alarm at Idle

I have a 2001 Yamaha 200 HP HPDI with approximately 600 hours on it. I get a overheating alarm when the engine runs for several minutes at dead idle. If I bump the speed up the alarm goes away. Runs fine otherwise. Local dealer replaced the impeller however the problem still exists. This is the week before the 4th of July and no one can look at it for weeks. I would like to use it over the Holiday. Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Can I still use it as is as long as the alarm is not going off?

Common cause is the poppet valve leaking. Disassemble, clean and reassemble. Clean the rubber grommet it is installed in as well as the valve body. I can't recommend running any motor where there may be a cooling problem without repairing first.

I'll give that a try. Any chance you can describe where the poppet valve is located on the motor and what it might look like? I don't have a service manual yet.

Look at the rear of the engine toward the bottom. It will have a large hose attached to the assembly. Disconnect the hose and remove the cover with a 10 mm deep socket. Pay attention to the order it cames apart. Clean the plunger and rubber grommet it seats in. Get a gasket before you take apart. Hope this helps.

hello<br /> on the HPDI you have to remove the injector driver and the ECU to access the poppet valve. buy a grommet and a gasket. its actually part of the maint cycle that has most likely been neglected. I sometimes wonder why yamaha bothers to print a maint schedule as most people would rather cry about it being broke,burned up or bogus than just pay to take care of it.<br /> be very careful when removing the Driver. you can break off the connecter harness very easily.<br />good luck and keep posting
