2000 4.3 LITER VORTEC VOLVO PENTA GL 2BB HOLLY, VOLVO PENTA SX OUTDRIVE

For some reason my engine alram will sound and sometimes it won't. Now everything is running fine all the temps and pressures are good and it will just start going off. I don't know why this would be sounding off for 5 to 10 mins. No vibrations, no stalling out, no overheating and no loss of oil pressure. Oh also checked the oil level in the outdrive and it is right on the money and clean as a whisle. Could it be a bad sensor for the alarm.

Re: Engine alarm souding off and on

I am fairly new to boating but my understanding is that you have two audible alarms, one for water temp and the other for oil pressure. My oil sending unit ( I think thts what its called) was doing that. It's on top passenger side of motor. $40 part, changed and no more problem. I was told I would probably need to change every couple of years. Hope this helps.

What is the FULL model number (all the letters) of your engine, serial number will also work?

I don't know they are on a decal on the riser and it is faded and unreadable

There should also be a metal tag on the back of the block, port side just above the oil filter housing on the block.

On that engine, there are only 2 things causing an alarm, low oil pressure, high engine coolant temp.
They are operated by switches (they look similar to gauge senders but are only switches).
Remove the wire (tan w/black stripe) from each to find which one is causing the alarm to go off.

Ok so I think it's the oil pressure switch, but I don't have a set of muffs to start the engine. I disconnected the coolant switch and it still beeps plugged it back in and uplugged the oil switch and it quit??

Thanks for your help Don. S I'm sure I will have more questions later but for now I think that is going to fix it. History note this boat has been seriouly neglected by the previous owner he left it outside for 2yrs uncovered. luckly the block was not cracked

Re: Engine alarm souding off and on

I have a 2003 Volvo Penta 8.1 GXIL-C. Oil hose separated on the port engine and VP sent me the repair kit. Port engine now works well.
Starboard engine which never had a problem is setting off an alarm. Initially it happened at low rpm and now only happens at high rpm which then puts the engine into limp mode. The oil hoses were labeled prior to changing out the connection to the oil filter. Starboard engine hoses checked against
port engine appear to be corrected well. Do you think this could be the sending unit or switches? Its weird that this all started just after changing the oil filter connection hose.
