I couldn't dig up an alignment tool so I resorted to pressing out the yolk and using it. Takes an additional twenty minutes but is the best tool there is. Careful not to disturb the needle bearings....

I disagree...you can get a better idea if the engine is slightly low or high using the bar. Also, why would you be taking apart u-joints unless you were going to be replacing them?

Here is how I do the alignment with an alignment bar:

Coat the end of the tool with a coat of grease and then insert it into the coupler.

Pull the alignment bar straight out without turning it. Note the depth of marks in the grease made by the splines in the coupler.

If the teeth marks in the grease are deep on the top side and shallow on the bottom side of the alignment bar, then your motor is too high.

Adjust your motor and check again.

The depth of the marks in the grease should be equal on both sides.

Recheck with the motor turned 180 degrees

I use an old yoke as well to verify that the engine alignment hasn't changed. If I can push it in with 1 finger, it's good. If I had to adjust the engine alignment, I would just pony up the $$ for a proper tool. Haven't had to do that yet.

Bruce... I am sure you are right about the bar being better than the yoke -- it is longer for one thing. My problem is obtaining one. There isn't a dealer out here in the boonies. I hate to wait for an order and, being cheap as I am, I don't like the idea of buying one if I only plan to use it once.... Cheers... Bruce

I use mine every year becase I pull my drive every fall. My brother also uses my bar.

See if there is anyone in your area willing to go in on one with you.
