Ok as many of you may now know, I am in the process of reporting my 1990 sundancer. While putting the new motor in, I noticed that I needed to adjust the front motor mounts down a tad bit but when I went to turn the adjusting nut, I noticed the nut and bolt were both turning. Are they both supposed to turn?

Not sure on that particular adjuster...

Some will have a bolt that needs to turn and then a lock nut.

Some the bolt has to be held and the nut turned and then typically these will be locked with a second nut.

and there are other ways to do it...

If you are getting the adjustment to move the engine alignment, you're probably doing it right.

Be sure you dial in the adjustment as close as humanly possible. It will improve life of the drive-line parts including the engine crankshaft bearings. While there is a tollerance listed... try for zero.

That pic is tiny... but looks like a ball on the "bolt" allowing movement like a joystick and rotation.

(going by the orientation in the picture)
For that you have to hold the "bolt" as you turn the one nut below the attachment flange (not in the picture), then bring the other nut tight against the other side of the flange to lock it.

When turning the upper nut, the bolt might turn and act like its adjusting properly (possibly from thread lock compound...) and its OK to adjust the lower nut that way... but then you have to hold the lower nut and "bolt" when tightening the upper one down to lock it.

I'd consider use of thread locking compound also, but don't get it anywhere but in the threads.

***********

If its not a ball head down in the "rubber" mount... then the bolt turning is probably indicating a failed mount.

That's the one I have. Well looks like I have to lift the motor back up and replace the damn mounts now...😎

I am working on the exact same boat. My 7.4L engine is in and I had left the exhaust off since its much easier to access the mounts adjusters that way. It took me a while to get it right?? and I still may try and tweak it further. I think I climbed in and out of the boat 1000 times :eek: to get it where it is. Patience is definitely required for getting the alignment right.
