i have a 1998 volvo penta 5.0 and was hoping to get some more information on it, so i know exactly which engine and drive i have and can get the right manual and parts i need.

Uhhhh, hate to be the one to tell you, but you don't have a Volvo, you have an OMC. All those number are OMC numbers.

well your right don, i checked. what i don't understand is, is why does it have volvo stamped all over the outdrive and engine then?

It is still basically a Volvo. Yours was made during the joint venture years. Looks like a "BY" model.

I agree, but he should be looking up parts through the OMC parts first and then, not all parts are exact, have run into problems like that before.

Hey Krowey, we have the exact same engine, and I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I'm still trying to find out the correct spark plugs for my engine, what the timing should be set at, etc. What plugs do you have in yours? Don recently gave me a link to some Volvo manuals for the PBYC engines, but it is different than a previous manual he gave me, which might be a SELOC, so I'd like to lean towards the Volvo manual. I'd be happy with just the specifications pages from the OMC manual, and I'd pay a good amount for a factory OMC manual for our model year! We should keep in touch to help each other out in the future. What kind of boat is it in (brand)?
I'm having a little trouble with mine starting and it's surging when idling, which right now I think may be bad fuel, a sticking choke, and/or time for carb rebuild. Runs fine anything above idle though.
