Re: Engine Back in, Bunch of new parts.. First sea trial today. Running rich with a k

Started the boat today. It fired first click of the key.

Pulled the plugs..Completly black, sooty..a mess. They are only 1 month old..used for an hour boat ride (THE last boat ride)

The engine still had they funny knocking sound. Use a stethoscope..couldnt pin point the noise. Wasn't the flappers (wish it was, thanks for having me check).

Did a compression test.. Ready..? 60psi on all cylinders. Each Cylinder was within 1 psi. I rented the gauge from Pep Boys. I made sure the fitting went in as far as it could go by hand. 60 psi.

Is that possible for them to all be that low and run like it did? Or start first click?

See the pic of the plug. Hurricane is on its way, so I screwed the plugs back in, put the charger on and covered it up nice and tight.

What do you think?
Thanks,
Joe

Ayuh,... I'd Hope the compression tested was pooched, 'n try another 1...

I'd also say the carb still needs some serious Tunin', atleast, maybe deeper...

Update: Looks like I spun a main bearing...not sure if it was the bad gas I ran that caused the carb to dump oil.. Or if it was the carb rebuild. Either way.. All I did after was take the carb off and blow it out and lower a float..put 10 gal of fresh and no more smoke.

Decision time. Local reputable guy wants $2100 for rebuilding my long block..$1100 to install. Turn key around $3300.

If I get the long block and do the labor myself (just got done doing it, but its 75 degrees everyday..and things should be 100 times easier).. Can I add anything to the old 1995 Gen 5 330 with any parts for $800-$1000? I guess I would have an easier time justifying all this if I was getting something upgraded. I of course would get the carb professionally rebuilt to ensure I dont have any more issues.

This guy will get me a reman short block for $1900. Rapido marine in Hollywood Florida.

Thanks guys.. I'm not giving up. If anything this upgrade will make me keep it longer and enjoy it.

Do the labor yourself. Sometimes the main's just go,had a 454 with 35,000 miles, bought new and I changed the oil every 3,000,main bearings went for no explainable reason. Keep it stock .
