I assume you've checked all the other items, Compressions, timing, spark plugs, timing advance ect.... If so, yeah, time to rip into the carb....

Could a cracked spark plug cause this?

Re: Engine bogging down, very little power

Can't get them out. I have sprayed WD40 into them to let them soak. I have the proper socket and a big tommy bar, but the buggers won't shift. So if it is a dodgy plug, then I'm stuck. 1- cant get them out & 2- I have spent a ton on money trying everything else. Carb is re-cleaned and will go back on soon. If she is still the same, then it's gotta be a bad plug.

Remove the rubber sleeve from the spark plug socket. If the socket kicks over with the sleeve still in, the plug WILL be broken....

Will try that when I put the carb back on. I have a new set of plugs ready and waiting to go, so need to get them out anyway.

not sure if you have room (been a while since I have worked on a 3.0). however for stubborn plugs in iron heads, I break off the insulator and put a short impact socket on the plug hex. it usually comes loose with a breaker bar and a "cheater" on the end.

I have a rubber like gasket under the carb that is a bit lumpy. Should I remove it completely and use gasket seal, or squash it back down and run some gasket seal around the base of the carb also? Not getting another carb kit at ?70 a pop. The carb is clean and ready to go back on.

No need to buy a complete carby kit just for the base gasket. Its part # is 27-8079821... and it'll cost the princely sum of $2.99 right here at iBoats (27-807982 - iboats).... There is absolutely nothing special about it, any gasket that fits will do. I wouldn't use the old gasket if it's damaged....

Try adjusting the float in the carb. Its free and won't take long at all. This fixed the same problem on my last boat.

I have just found that the pump rod clip is missing. Anyone know the part number for it and where to get one? This tiny little circlip could scupper all my work! I think it's around 4mm.

Re: Engine bogging down, very little power

Right, plugs done, carb on, circlip fitted. Took her out for a few hours and much fun it was! My only concern is that when I open her up to almost full throttle, the engine makes a "tinging, clanging" type noise. Quite high pitched. Grey smoke also. The burning smell is just all the **** being burnt off the engine I'm sure. Back off the throttle and the noise goes away. Oil and filter change done a few weeks ago. Tappits maybe? Valve clearance? Will remove the rocker cover, as I need a new gasket on it (sorry...part number for gasket?), as it has a small oil leak coming from just under the cover. Any ideas on the noise? At least she's now motoring! :D

Re: Engine bogging down, very little power

The noise sounds like 'pinging'.... Which is the pre-cursor of detonation... Not a good thing. Check your timing, and the advance curve.... It's usually a sign of over advanced timing, or low quality fuel.... If the timing's all ok, try a high grade of fuel...

Chris....

(Would have answered earlier, but wife and I were watching 'We're the Millers'... Very funny film....)

Don't understand the imminent destruction bit Chris. Ticks over sweet, picks up without hesitation. Responsive on the throttle. Flys along when trimmed. Just has a ticking noise at higher throttle in gear. No such noises when revving out of gear. Worried about taking her out again now. :blue:

Ayuh,... Yer hearin' Detonation, which is yer motor consumin' itself,....

Every Tick ya hear is another piece of the motor, headed out the tailpipe,...

Probably from a Lean condition, or possibly advanced timin',...
